Andover, South Dakota
As long as I can remember, trains have been a big part of my life. When I was younger, I remember watching the parade of BNSF power in all colors rolling through my hometown of Bristol, SD. It didn’t take me long to get into model railroading, and soon I had started a collection of Lionel and HO scale trains. I joined the model railroad club in Aberdeen soon after, and I began to learn and grow in the hobby.
The first railroad I focused on modeling seriously was the Milwaukee Road in the 1970s. Ten years and two layouts later, I am still an avid fan of the Milwaukee, and I am in the process of building a layout based on their operations in and around the town of Andover, SD from 1975-77. Along with 1970s Milwaukee, my interests also include Steam Era Milwaukee, and late-2000s BNSF.
I am also a member of the steam preservation community, and I am an active member at the James Valley Threshing Association in Andover, SD. Every year, our antique farm machinery show brings thousands of people from all around the world to see steam engines and tractors doing farm work like they did in years past. I also am a part-time employee at the Black Hills Central Railroad, helping around the shop and firing their two Baldwin logging Mallets.
